Legend has it that thousands of years ago when the Aztec Empire dominated the Valley of Mexico, they subdued neighboring towns, forcing them to pay tribute. Tired of this, the chief of the Tlaxcaltecas decided to fight for the freedom of his people.

Iztaccíhuatl, daughter of the cacique, and Popocatépetl, a brave warrior, were in love. Before going to war the young man asked for the hand of the princess.

Popocatépetl left and another lover of the princess, jealous of her love, told her that her lover had died in combat. Iztaccíhuatl, without knowing that everything was a lie, died of sadness.

Popocatépetl returned victorious and upon discovering the death of Iztaccíhuatl decided to honor his honor and memory. He had a tomb built before the sun, joining 10 hills to form a huge mountain. He took the princess and carried her to the top of the mountain where he knelt before her with a burning torch. Since then they have never parted.

Over time the snow covered their bodies and they became two volcanoes. It is said that when the warrior remembers his beloved, his heart of fire trembles and his torch goes up in smoke. This is why today Popocatépetl continues to spew fumaroles.
